While the four of us were in Key West, Ali and Cam suggested we stop in a Karaoke bar after dinner on our first night. Both of the girls have participated in the past and enjoy performing. Ali in particular goes out with friends – and seems to take pleasure both in singing and hearing others sing with varying success.
Sherry and I last did any sort of a public singing appearance like this many, many years ago (I think it was on a cruise), but the girls applied a little daughterly pressure to get me to pick a song. I was not so sure. The crowd seemed much younger, and was enjoying rap songs – some with angry lyrics. I was not so sure anything I would pick would receive a warm reception. I initially was tempted to choose “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” from Elton John, but Cam convinced me the song would be too long. After taking some liquid encouragement, I finally signed up for “Take it Easy” by the Eagles, at Ali’s suggestion, and then waited my turn, getting more and more nervous along the way.
When it was finally time for me to get on stage, Ali and Sherry came to back me up (appreciate it guys!) but really let me take the lead.
It turned out the crowd was really into the song, I managed to find the right key, and there was general enthusiasm for the performance.
A great moment came during the 32 second instrumental bridge – rather than stand there pretending to play air guitar, I thought it would be cool if I grabbed Sherry’s hand and we started dancing. It was great fun, and the audience really appreciated having some action to look at.
I am really glad that everyone encouraged me. I do not have a great voice like Cam, but at least I can hold a tune!
